Erdős Problem 1157 --- GPT 6 Astra Ultra partial attempt
FORMAL RESTATEMENT
Fix parameters $r,k,s\geq2$, and let $\mathcal F_{r,k,s}$ consist of all $r$-uniform hypergraphs on $k$ vertices with $s$ edges. Determine \[ \operatorname{ex}_r(n,\mathcal F_{r,k,s}), \] the largest edge count of an $n$-vertex $r$-uniform hypergraph containing no member of that family as a subhypergraph.CONTEXT AND SCOPE
This replaces the earlier statement-only record with an elementary mathematical attempt. The arguments below establish only their stated partial results; no novelty or full solution is claimed. The indexed official opening says t,k,r>=2 but subsequently uses s for the number of edges. This paraphrase consistently names that edge parameter s; it does not repeat the separate conjectural formula in the remarks, where another uniformity-index typo appears.
ATTACK PLAN AND WORK
Assume $n\ge k\ge r$ and $2\le s\le\binom kr$; outside the feasible range the forbidden family may be empty. Being free of this family is equivalent to every $k$-vertex set containing at most $s-1$ edges. Double counting pairs $(e,U)$ with $e\subseteq U$ and $|U|=k$ gives the exact upper bound \[e(H)\binom{n-r}{k-r}\le(s-1)\binom nk, \qquad e(H)\le\frac{s-1}{\binom kr}\binom nr.\tag{1}\]An alteration argument gives a complementary, usually much smaller, lower bound. Choose each $r$-set independently with probability $p$. There are $\binom nr p$ expected edges. The expected number of forbidden configurations is at most $\binom nk\binom{\binom kr}{s}p^s$. Delete one edge from each surviving forbidden configuration; this destroys all of them, since deletion cannot create a new one. For $a=(k-r)/(s-1)$ and $p=c n^{-a}$ with a sufficiently small fixed $c>0$, both expectation terms have power $n^{r-a}$, with coefficients proportional to $c$ and $c^s$. Their difference is positive. Hence, when $r-a>0$, \[\operatorname{ex}_r(n,\mathcal F_{r,k,s})\gg n^{r-(k-r)/(s-1)}.\tag{2}\] The constants depend on the fixed parameters. A nonpositive exponent is not being interpreted as a growing lower bound.
