Erdős Problem #873: independent continuation
Date: 2026-09-23. Research attempt; no claim of a new published result.1) TARGET AND SOURCE AUDIT
For increasing $A=\{a_1<a_2<\cdots\}\subseteq\mathbb N$, let $F(A,X,k)$ count $i$ with $\operatorname{lcm}(a_i,\ldots,a_{i+k-1})<X$. For every $\epsilon>0$, does some $k$ give $F(A,X,k)<X^\epsilon$ for all $X>0$?All supplied versions considered: 873.tex, 873_v2.tex. Both versions give the same divisor-block lower bound and claim it forces dependence of $k$ on $A$ and $\epsilon$. That inference is not justified: their lower bound is $X^{o(1)}$, compatible with every fixed positive power. The blocks themselves do not depend on $k$, so one set already works simultaneously for every fixed $k$. I replace the inference by a precise elementary obstruction from $A=\mathbb N$.
2) WORK
Consecutive integers give the right fixed-$k$ obstruction.
For every $m,k\ge1$, put $L=\operatorname{lcm}(m,m+1,\ldots,m+k-1)$. Then \[ {m(m+1)\cdots(m+k-1)\over(k-1)!}\le L\le(m+k-1)^k. \tag{1} \] To prove the lower bound, fix a prime $p$. At each power $p^a$, let $c_a$ be the number of multiples in this interval of $k$ consecutive integers. When $c_a>0$, its contribution to the valuation of the product divided by $L$ is $c_a-1$. Such an interval has $c_a\le\lfloor(k-1)/p^a\rfloor+1$. Summing gives \[ v_p\!\left({\prod_{j=0}^{k-1}(m+j)\over L}\right) \le\sum_{a\ge1}\left\lfloor{k-1\over p^a}\right\rfloor=v_p((k-1)!). \] This proves $1$, including $k=1$.Every $m$ with $m+k-1<X^{1/k}$ is counted by $F(\mathbb N,X,k)$, while $1$ shows every counted $m$ is smaller than $((k-1)!X)^{1/k}$. Therefore \[ F(\mathbb N,X,k)=\Theta_k(X^{1/k})\qquad(X\to\infty). \] In particular no fixed $k$ can handle every $\epsilon>0$: choose $\epsilon<1/k$. A necessary condition for a proposed $k$ at exponent $\epsilon$ is $1/k\le\epsilon$. This argument does not establish that $k$ must depend on $A$; uniformity over $A$ at a fixed $\epsilon$ remains a different issue.
The source's primorial lower bound has exponent $(\log2+o(1))/\log\log X\to0$, so it proves a super-polylogarithmic obstruction only. Calling it an obstruction to all power bounds confuses two different scales.
3) ADVERSARIAL VERIFICATION
The valuation proof subtracts one for each prime power occurring at least once, exactly the maximum valuation in the lcm. Strict inequalities at $X$ only change the counting bounds by $O_k(1)$. The result does not address the all-$X$ target for general $A$, or the borderline $1/k=\epsilon$.4) FINAL
UNRESOLVED. A general upper bound with arbitrarily small positive exponent is still missing. The corrected fixed-$k$ obstruction clarifies necessary quantifiers but supplies no such upper bound.5) SOURCES CHECKED
Both supplied versions read in full. Checked the formal-conjectures statementhttps://raw.githubusercontent.com/google-deepmind/formal-conjectures/main/FormalConjectures/ErdosProblems/873.lean on 2026-09-23, including its all-$X$ quantifier. Its open theorem contains a placeholder proof; it is used as a statement reference only.
