Erdős Problem 658
Statement and result.
For each $\delta>0$, must every subset $A\subseteq\{1,\ldots,N\}^2$ of size at least $\delta N^2$ contain the four vertices of a square when $N$ is sufficiently large? Yes, even if the square must be axis-aligned. We give the complete reduction to the density Hales--Jewett theorem, which is an explicit external dependency. The external theorem.
For a finite alphabet $S$ and $\eta>0$, there is an integer $L$ such that every subset of $S^L$ of density at least $\eta$ contains a combinatorial line. Such a line is specified by a nonempty set $I\subseteq\{1,\ldots,L\}$ of variable coordinates, with all other coordinates fixed: the variable coordinates are simultaneously set equal to each possible letter of $S$. This is the density Hales--Jewett theorem of Furstenberg and Katznelson. Its proof is not reproduced here.A density transfer that handles the boundary.
We may assume $0<\delta\leq1$, since larger densities are impossible. Apply the theorem with the four-letter alphabet \[ S=\{(0,0),(1,0),(0,1),(1,1)\},\qquad \eta=\delta/2, \] and fix a resulting length $L\geq1$. Suppose $N\geq8L/\delta$. For each translation $t\in\{1,\ldots,N-L\}^2$, map words to lattice points by \[ \varphi_t(w)=t+\sum_{j=1}^L w_j. \] Every image lies in $\{1,\ldots,N\}^2$, since each coordinate of the sum is between zero and $L$.For any fixed word, write $s=\sum w_j$. Its image as $t$ varies is a translate of an $(N-L)$-by-$(N-L)$ square contained in the original grid. At most \[ N^2-(N-L)^2\leq2LN \] points of the original grid are outside this translate. Thus \[ \#\{t:\varphi_t(w)\in A\}\geq\delta N^2-2LN. \] Average this inequality over all words and then over all translations. Some $t$ has \[ \frac{|\varphi_t^{-1}(A)|}{4^L} \geq\frac{\delta N^2-2LN}{(N-L)^2} \geq\delta-\frac{2L}{N}\geq\frac\delta2. \tag{1} \] In the second inequality the numerator is nonnegative and $(N-L)^2\leq N^2$. The map need not be injective: density is measured in the word space, where the external theorem applies.
The combinatorial line becomes a square.
By $1$, some combinatorial line is contained in $\varphi_t^{-1}(A)$. Let $I$ be its variable coordinate set and let $u$ be $t$ plus the sum of its fixed letters. Its four images are \[ u,\quad u+(|I|,0),\quad u+(0,|I|),\quad u+(|I|,|I|). \] These are distinct because $|I|\geq1$; they form an axis-aligned square, and all belong to $A$. This proves the assertion with, for example, $N_0=\lceil8L/\delta\rceil$.Attribution and assessment.
The existence of the required word length is the deep part supplied by Furstenberg--Katznelson. A primary account of the theorem and a later proof is D. H. J. Polymath, A new proof of the density Hales--Jewett theorem, https://annals.math.princeton.edu/2012/175-3/p06. Current statement and attribution: https://www.erdosproblems.com/658, checked 24 September 2026. The reduction above specifies the density loss, noninjective map, boundary control, and positive side length. It is a complete answer relative to the stated theorem, not an independent proof of that theorem. No novelty or local Lean verification is claimed.Completion rate estimate: 100%.
