FORMAL RESTATEMENT
Erdős #518; the sufficiently-large-order bound and its sharpness, 2026-09-24. In every red-blue coloring of $K_n$, can all vertices be covered by at most $\sqrt n$ monochromatic paths of one common color? Paths may overlap, and singleton vertices count as paths. Let $f(n)$ be the largest, over such colorings, of the minimum number of paths required.QUICK LITERATURE AND CONTEXT CHECK
Pokrovskiy--Versteegen--Williams, version 2, Theorem 1.3, proves $f(n)\leq\sqrt n$ for $n>20^{40}$. The printed theorem has this qualification. We reconstruct the final argument using three precise intermediate results from that paper and prove the extremal lower-bound construction. The remaining finite range is not silently included in the conclusion.OBJECTIVE AND ATTACK PLAN
A coloring needing too many paths has a blue path covering almost all vertices. Most remaining vertices are red-adjacent to every vertex of that path. A bipartite covering lemma then yields the desired number of red paths, contradicting the assumption.WORK
Explicit external inputs. Put $C=20^4$. We use Proposition 3.4, which states $f(m)<\sqrt m+C$ for every positive integer $m$. With that bound, Lemma 3.2, specialized to $C_1=C,C_2=0$, says that if $n>10^4(C+1)^4$ and a coloring requires more than $\sqrt n$ paths, it has a monochromatic path $P$, say blue, such that, with $X=V(P)$ and $Y=V(K_n)\setminus X$, \[ |Y|\leq\sqrt n+10(C+1)n^{1/4},\qquad d_{\rm blue}(y,X)\leq2(C+1)\sqrt n\quad(y\in Y). \tag{1} \] Finally Lemma 2.4 concerns a bipartite graph with classes $X,Y$. Write $X_0,Y_0$ for the vertices adjacent to every vertex in the other class, and $X_1=X\setminus X_0$, $Y_1=Y\setminus Y_0$. If $|X|>|Y|$, $Y_0\ne\varnothing$, and either the graph is complete bipartite or \[ \frac{|X_0|}{|Y_1|}>\frac{2|X_1|}{|Y_0|}, \tag{2} \] then at most $\lceil |X|/(|Y|+1)\rceil$ paths cover all its vertices. These three results, including their proofs, are external dependencies of the reconstruction below.A blue cover that detects many universal red neighbors. In the bipartite graph of red edges between $X$ and $Y$, a vertex is in $Y_0$ exactly when it has no blue neighbor on $P$. Any two vertices of $Y_1$ can be joined by a blue path: choose a blue neighbor of each on $P$ and take the intervening subpath, allowing the two neighbors to coincide. Pairing the vertices of $Y_1$, using one extra path for an unpaired vertex, and using singleton paths for $Y_0$, therefore gives a blue cover with at most \[ 1+\lceil |Y_1|/2\rceil+|Y_0| \leq\tfrac32+\tfrac12|Y|+\tfrac12|Y_0| \tag{3} \] paths. The first path is $P$ itself. Overlap between the other paths is permitted.
Verifying the quantitative hypotheses. Suppose $n>C^{10}=20^{40}$ and a coloring requires more than $\sqrt n$ paths. Set $t=n^{1/4}$ and $\alpha=11C/t$. Then $t>400C^2$ and $\alpha<1/100$. Equation $1$ gives $|Y|\leq(1+\alpha)t^2$. Equation $3$ and the assumed failure imply \[ |Y_0|>2t^2-|Y|-3>(1-2\alpha)t^2, \qquad |Y_1|<3\alpha t^2=33Ct. \tag{4} \] The second strict inequality in the first bound uses $\alpha t^2=11Ct>3$. Every member of $X_1$ has a blue neighbor in $Y_1$, so counting missing red edges by $1$ gives \[ |X_1|\leq2(C+1)t^2|Y_1|<67C^2t^3. \tag{5} \] If $Y_1$ is empty the bipartite graph is complete. Otherwise, $4$--$5$ show \[ \frac{2|X_1|}{|Y_0|}<\frac{134C^2t}{1-2\alpha}<t^2, \] while \[ \frac{|X_0|}{|Y_1|} >\frac{t^4-(1+\alpha)t^2-67C^2t^3}{33Ct}>t^2. \] For the last inequality it suffices that $t>67C^2+33C+(1+\alpha)/t$, which follows from $t>400C^2$. The preceding inequality follows from $134/(1-2\alpha)<400$. Also $|X|>|Y|$ and $Y_0\ne\varnothing$ follow immediately from these bounds. Thus $2$ applies.
The integer rounding step. Let $k=\lfloor\sqrt n\rfloor$. The blue cover consisting of $P$ and singleton vertices of $Y$ shows that $|Y|\geq k$; otherwise at most $k$ paths suffice. Since $n\leq k^2+2k$, Lemma 2.4 yields a red cover of size at most \[ \left\lceil\frac{n-|Y|}{|Y|+1}\right\rceil \leq\left\lceil\frac{n-k}{k+1}\right\rceil\leq k. \] This is the required contradiction. We have proved $f(n)\leq\lfloor\sqrt n\rfloor$ for $n>20^{40}$, subject to the stated intermediate inputs.
Sharpness. For $n=k^2$, partition the vertices into $A,B$ of sizes $k^2-k+1,k-1$. Color edges inside $A$ blue and every other edge red. A blue cover needs a singleton path for each vertex of $B$ and at least one path for $A$, hence at least $k$ paths. A red path has at most $|B|+1=k$ vertices of $A$, because $A$ is independent in red and consecutive visits to $A$ require distinct intervening vertices of $B$ within that path. Therefore at least $\lceil(k^2-k+1)/k\rceil=k$ red paths are needed, even allowing different paths to reuse $B$. This proves the sharpness of the square-root bound at square orders.
RESULT AND LIMITATIONS
Attempt status: unresolved in the unrestricted all-$n$ formulation. The known theorem for $n>20^{40}$ is reconstructed from three clearly stated source lemmas, and its sharp lower example is proved. The range $n\leq20^{40}$ is not settled here. The completion estimate concerns this substantial large-order result and does not certify the omitted finite range.SOURCES
