Erdős Problem #238: independent continuation
Date: 2026-09-23. Research attempt; no claim of a new published result.1) TARGET AND SOURCE AUDIT
For fixed $c_2>0$, can blocks of consecutive primes at most $x$, all internal gaps greater than $c_2$, have length exceeding $c_1\log x$ for every prescribed $c_1>0$ as required in the original question? All supplied versions considered: 238.tex. The source gives a fixed multiple of $\log x$ from the count of bad gaps. Its sharpness lemma omits $0\le B\le m-1$ and incorrectly calls the maximum $q+1$ when the remainder is zero. Both defects are repaired by the exact formula below.
2) WORK
For a path with $m$ vertices and exactly $B$ deleted edges, $0\le B\le m-1$, the least possible largest component is \[ \left\lceil{m\over B+1}\right\rceil. \] There are $B+1$ nonempty components, so the lower bound is averaging. Writing $m=q(B+1)+r$, choose $r$ components of size $q+1$ and the others of size $q$; if $r=0$ every component has size $q$. This attains the ceiling.A more informative input would be a local bad-gap count. For any consecutive index interval $I$ containing $m_I$ prime vertices and $b_I$ bad internal gaps, the same proof gives \[ L_{c_2}(x)\ge\max_I\left\lceil{m_I\over b_I+1}\right\rceil. \] Thus a sufficient genuinely stronger route is to find intervals with $m_I/(b_I+1)\gg c_1\log x$ for any desired $c_1$. A global count $B$ does not guarantee them: the balanced construction above distributes the deleted edges nearly periodically and attains the global lower bound on every large block up to endpoint errors.
