Erdős Problem 168: an effective formula for avoiding $\{n,2n,3n\}$
Statement and outcome
Let $F(N)$ be the largest size of a subset of $[1,N]$ containing no triple $\{n,2n,3n\}$. The problem asks for the limit $L=\lim F(N)/N$ and whether it is irrational. We reconstruct the Graham--Spencer--Witsenhausen series and give an exact finite algorithm with a certified tail bound. This proves existence and effective approximation of the limit, but does not decide its arithmetic nature.Split into independent multiplicative components
List the $3$-smooth numbers as $d_1<d_2<\cdots$, namely the numbers $2^a3^b$ with $a,b\ge0$. Every positive integer has a unique representation $m2^a3^b$ with $(m,6)=1$. Multiplication by two or three preserves $m$, so every forbidden triple lies in one such component.Let $f(k)$ be the maximum admissible size in $\{d_1,\ldots,d_k\}$, with $f(0)=0$. Adding one point can increase an optimum by at most one and cannot decrease it, so $\Delta_k=f(k)-f(k-1)\in\{0,1\}$. Put \[ C(x)=\#\{m\le x:(m,6)=1\} =\lfloor x\rfloor-\lfloor x/2\rfloor-\lfloor x/3\rfloor+\lfloor x/6\rfloor. \] Independence of the components, followed by summing the increments of $f$, gives the exact identity \[ F(N)=\sum_{\substack{m\le N\$m,6)=1}} f\left(\#\{k:d_k\le N/m\}\right) =\sum_{d_k\le N}\Delta_k C(N/d_k). \tag{1} \] No compatibility choices between optimal component subsets are required.
Convergence and a computable enclosure
We have $C(x)=x/3+O(1)$ with error at most four, and \[ \sum_k\frac1{d_k} =\left(\sum_{a\ge0}2^{-a}\right) \left(\sum_{b\ge0}3^{-b}\right)=3. \] For each fixed $k$, $C(N/d_k)/N\to1/(3d_k)$, while it is bounded above by $1/d_k$. Dominated convergence in $1$ proves \[ L=\frac13\sum_{k\ge1}\frac{\Delta_k}{d_k}. \tag{2} \] For any cutoff $B$, write $K=\#\{d_k\le B\}$ and define the exact rationals \[ S_B=\frac13\sum_{d_k\le B}\frac{\Delta_k}{d_k}, \qquad T_B=3-\sum_{d_k\le B}\frac1{d_k}. \] Then \[ S_B\le L\le S_B+T_B/3,\qquad \left|\frac{F(N)}N-L\right| \le \frac{4K}{N}+\frac43T_B. \tag{3} \] The second inequality separates the first $K$ terms of $1$ from the two nonnegative tails. In particular these are rigorous approximations, not a decimal guess. An exact finite dynamic programme
For a smooth cutoff $d_k$, draw the lattice points $(a,b)$ with $2^a3^b\le d_k$. Forbidden triples become $\{(a,b),(a+1,b),(a,b+1)\}$. Process rows of fixed $a$. The row widths $w_a$ are nonincreasing. Encode its selected points by a binary mask $M$, with bit $b$ representing $(a,b)$.If consecutive row masks are $M$ and $S$, the only new forbidden triples occur when bits $b,b+1$ of $M$ and bit $b$ of $S$ are all one. Thus the exact transition is \[ D_{a+1}(S)=|S|+ \max_{\;S\,\&\,M\,\&\,(M\!>\!>1)=0}D_a(M), \qquad D_0(M)=|M|. \tag{4} \] Here $|S|$ is its number of one-bits, $\&$ is bitwise intersection, and $M\!>\!>1$ shifts the mask one place down. The maximum of the final row values is $f(k)$. Each forbidden triple uses just two consecutive rows, so $4$ checks every constraint.
The offline exact-integer calculation through $B=10^6$, containing $142$ smooth numbers, gives \[ \frac{669510837305}{835884417024} \le L\le \frac{9298841555}{11609505792}. \tag{5} \] These endpoints are approximately $0.80096102244$ and $0.80096790696$. The computation uses $4$ and rational arithmetic in $3$; separate brute-force checks on small diagrams verify the recurrence.

Formula $2$ is the known Graham--Witsenhausen--Spencer result, reconstructed here rather than claimed as new: On Extremal Density Theorems for Linear Forms, 1977, Section 4, https://mathweb.ucsd.edu/~ronspubs/77_05_extremal_density.pdf. Problem: https://www.erdosproblems.com/168. The earlier localgpt_pro_5.2/168.tex contains weaker interval bounds; its unchecked numerical table is not used. The exact formula, convergence and enclosure are established. Irrationality, or a simplification deciding it, remains unresolved in this attempt.
