Erdős Problem 163: Ramsey numbers of degenerate graphs
1) Statement and scope
For each fixed integer $d\geq1$, does every $d$-degenerate graph $H$ on $n$ vertices satisfy $R(H)\ll_d n$? Here every nonempty subgraph of a $d$-degenerate graph has a vertex of degree at most $d$, and $R(H)$ is the ordinary two-colour Ramsey number. The answer is affirmative. We deduce the full assertion from Lee's quantitative theorem, including the small-order cases and the equivalent formulation using forests. The substantial Ramsey embedding theorem is an explicit external input.2) The external theorem and its application
Lee's theorem supplies an absolute constant $c>0$ such that, if $H$ is $d$-degenerate, has chromatic number $r$, and has $n\geq 2^{d^2 2^{cr}}$ vertices, then \[ R(H)\leq 2^{d2^{cr}}n. \] Repeatedly delete a vertex of degree at most $d$ and colour the vertices in reverse deletion order. At each step at most $d$ colours are forbidden, so $r\leq d+1$.Put \[ M=\left\lceil2^{d^2 2^{c(d+1)}}\right\rceil, \qquad A=2^{d2^{c(d+1)}}. \] Adjoin isolated vertices to $H$ to obtain $H'$ on $N=\max(n,M)$ vertices. This preserves degeneracy and keeps the chromatic number at most $d+1$. Lee's size hypothesis therefore holds for $H'$. Since $H$ is a subgraph of $H'$ and $N\leq Mn$ for $n\geq1$, \[ R(H)\leq R(H')\leq AN\leq AMn. \] The constant $AM$ depends only on $d$, as required. An edgeless graph on $n$ vertices has Ramsey number $n$, so degeneracy zero also causes no exception.
3) Why the forest formulation is equivalent
Suppose the edges of a graph are the union of $a$ forests. Every subgraph on $v\geq1$ vertices has at most $a(v-1)$ edges. Its average degree is strictly less than $2a$, so it has a vertex of degree at most $2a-1$. Thus it is $(2a-1)$-degenerate, and the result just proved applies with this parameter.Conversely, choose an ordering of a $d$-degenerate graph in which each vertex has at most $d$ earlier neighbours. Assign different labels from $\{1,\ldots,d\}$ to the edges from a vertex to its earlier neighbours. This labels every edge once. Each label class is a forest: otherwise the last vertex on a cycle of that label would have two earlier incident edges with the same label. Hence bounded degeneracy also implies an edge partition into a bounded number of forests. These arguments explain the equivalence with constants depending on the fixed parameter; they do not assert equality of the two parameters.
4) Outcome and sources
Outcome: SOLVED, conditional only on the cited established Ramsey theorem. The padding argument, greedy colouring, and the forest reductions have been supplied explicitly. No new proof of Lee's theorem or new Ramsey bound is claimed.- C. Lee, Ramsey numbers of degenerate graphs, Annals of Mathematics 185 $2017$, 791--829,
