Problem 15: an exact gap identity and a limitation of the local criterion
1) OBJECTIVE AND SOURCE REVIEW
Attempt dated 2026-09-23. The target is unconditional convergence of $\sum_{n\ge1}(-1)^nn/p_n$. I read all six supplied versions:15.tex, 15_v2.tex, 15_v3.tex, 15_v4.tex, 15_v5.tex, and 15_v6.tex. Respectively they study an Abel criterion, general monotone gauges, a regular-gauge converse, local dyadic gauges, prime-gap weights, and positive model gaps. These are structural reductions and model obstructions; none establishes cancellation for the actual primes. 2) WORK
First an exact finite identity avoids inherited error estimates. Put $a_n=n/p_n$, $g_n=p_{n+1}-p_n$, and $S_N=\sum_{n=1}^N(-1)^na_n$. Directly shifting a finite sum gives \[ 2S_N=\sum_{n=1}^N(-1)^n\frac{ng_n}{p_np_{n+1}} -\sum_{n=1}^N\frac{(-1)^n}{p_{n+1}}-a_1+(-1)^Na_{N+1}. \] Indeed $a_n-a_{n+1}=ng_n/(p_np_{n+1})-1/p_{n+1}$, and $\sum(-1)^n(a_n-a_{n+1})=2S_N+a_1-(-1)^Na_{N+1}$. The reciprocal-prime series converges by the alternating test and $a_{N+1}\to0$ by prime growth. Thus convergence is exactly equivalent to that of the displayed gap series, with its actual denominators. No replacement of $p_n$ by $n\log n$ is needed.Next the supposed strict enlargement from global to local dyadic absolute-discrepancy criteria in 15_v4.tex requires qualification. For any sign sequence define $A(t)=\sum_{4\le n\le t}\varepsilon_n$, $I_k=[2^k,2^{k+1})\cap\mathbb Z$, and \[
M_k=\max_{t\in I_k}|A(t)|,\qquad D_k=\max_{t\in I_k}|A(t)-A(2^k-1)|,\quad k\ge2.
\] Then \[
\sum_{k\ge2}\frac{D_k}{2^kk}<\infty
\quad\Longleftrightarrow\quad
\sum_{k\ge2}\frac{M_k}{2^kk}<\infty.
\] For one direction, $D_k\le M_k+M_{k-1}$ (take $M_1=0$), and the weights of consecutive indices are comparable. For the other, $M_k\le\sum_{j=2}^kD_j$ because the full sum is a concatenation of local blocks. Interchanging nonnegative sums gives \[
\sum_{k\ge2}\frac{M_k}{2^kk}
\le\sum_{j\ge2}D_j\sum_{k\ge j}\frac1{2^kk}
\le2\sum_{j\ge2}\frac{D_j}{2^jj}.
\] Thus the two summability tests accept exactly the same sequences when compared to global block maxima. Changing the description of the gauges does not itself yield extra prime cancellation.
3) ADVERSARIAL VERIFICATION
The finite identity includes its boundary term and the initial prime $p_1=2$. A dyadic-block proof of convergence also needs control of unfinished blocks; Abel summation bounds those by $D_k/(2^kk\log2)$, which tends to zero under the summability hypothesis. The abstract divergent sign and even-gap models in the supplied versions are not prime counterexamples. The lower fluctuation $|G_n|\gg\log n$ infinitely often in the last version does not itself supply an upper bound on actual prime-gap imbalance.4) FINAL
UNRESOLVED. Neither the exact identity nor the equivalence of maximal-discrepancy criteria proves that the actual alternating prime gaps cancel sufficiently. Tao's result checked below assumes a sufficiently strong prime-tuples conjecture; that hypothesis is not proved here. No verified unconditional improvement in the prime-specific estimate was obtained.5) SOURCES CHECKED
All six source versions were read in full. T. Tao, The convergence of an alternating series of Erdős, assuming the Hardy--Littlewood prime tuples conjecture,https://arxiv.org/abs/2308.07205, checked 2026-09-23, for the conditional nature and exact target. The finite identities and dyadic comparison above are proved directly.
