Erdős Problem 1189 --- GPT 6 Astra Ultra partial attempt
FORMAL RESTATEMENT
A finite set $D=\{1<n_1<\cdots<n_k\}$ is a covering set if residues $a_i\pmod{n_i}$ can be chosen to cover $\mathbb Z$. Call $D$ irreducible if no proper subset admits any such covering choice. Determine the number of irreducible covering sets with $k$ elements, the smallest and largest possible $n_k$, and \[\max_D\sum_{i=1}^k\frac1{n_i}.\] Also, do infinitely many integers $m$ have the property that all their divisors greater than $1$ form an irreducible covering set?CONTEXT AND SCOPE
This replaces the earlier statement-only record with an elementary mathematical attempt. The arguments below establish only their stated partial results; no novelty or full solution is claimed. The last subquestion is already affirmative in the official remarks (Sun: m=2^$p-1$p for odd primes p). The remaining estimation questions keep the entry open.
ATTACK PLAN AND WORK
Every covering set of moduli must satisfy \[\sum_{i=1}^k\frac1{n_i}\ge1.\tag{1}\] Indeed average the covering multiplicity over one common period; its average is the left side, while pointwise coverage forces it to be at least one. In particular $n_1\le k$, and two different moduli greater than one cannot suffice because $1/2+1/3<1$.Equation $1$ gives a sufficient, though restrictive, irreducibility test: if a modulus set has a covering assignment and deleting any one modulus makes the reciprocal sum less than one, then it is irreducible. Every proper subset then has reciprocal sum less than one, independently of how its residues are chosen. This is stronger than merely finding private witnesses for one assignment.
For a general finite $D$, irreducibility is decidable by a completely explicit finite search. For each $D\setminus\{d\}$, enumerate its $\prod_{m\ne d}m$ residue choices and check coverage of its least-common-multiple period. It suffices to check these one-element deletions: any smaller covering subset would remain a covering after arbitrary extra classes are added. The local check applies this exhaustive test to $D=\{2,3,4,6,12\}$, separately from the minimality certificate in 1188.
