Definitions and mathematical statement

For $k\geq2$, let $K_n^{(k)}$ be the complete $k$-uniform hypergraph and let $r_k(n,n)$ be the least $N$ such that every red/blue coloring of $K_N^{(k)}$ contains a monochromatic $K_n^{(k)}$. Write $H\to(K_n^{(k)})_2$ for this arrowing property. Its size Ramsey number is \[ \widehat r_k(n,n)=\min\{|E(H)|:H\text{ is }k\text{-uniform and }H\to(K_n^{(k)})_2\}. \] The host may have any finite vertex set.

Dudek--Rödl question. The source notes the graph identity $\widehat r_2(n,n)=\binom{r_2(n,n)}2$ and asks whether \[ \widehat r_3(n,n)=\binom{r_3(n,n)}3. \] The record ends with "In particular," without its continuation; no missing subquestion is reconstructed.

Supplied counterexample. The aid uses $r_3(4,4)=13$ and attributes to McKay a verified arrowing result \[ K_{13}^{(3)}-e\longrightarrow(K_4^{(3)})_2. \] It therefore reports \[ \widehat r_3(4,4)\leq285<286=\binom{13}3, \] refuting the proposed general equality. The exact value of $\widehat r_3(4,4)$ is not determined by this upper bound, and the verification certificate/reference is not supplied.

Reported critical-edge structure. Let $n\geq3$ and let $H$ be edge-minimal with $H\to(K_n^{(3)})_2$, meaning deletion of any edge destroys arrowing. For each $e\in E(H)$, fix one avoiding coloring of $H-e$. Coloring $e$ red and then blue gives witness vertex sets $R_e,B_e$, respectively, with \[ |R_e|=|B_e|=n,\qquad R_e\cap B_e=e. \] All triples on $R_e$ other than $e$ are red in the same fixed avoiding coloring, and all triples on $B_e$ other than $e$ are blue. This same-coloring requirement is part of the assertion.

The aid derives, for every supported vertex and every pair of positive codegree, \[ \deg_H(v)\geq2\binom{n-1}2-1,\qquad \deg_H(\{u,v\})\geq2n-5. \] Isolated vertices are excluded from the first quantifier and zero-codegree pairs from the second. In particular $H$ has at least $2n-3$ supported vertices. Handshaking consequently yields the elementary bound \[ |E(H)|\geq\left\lceil\frac{(2n-3)(2\binom{n-1}2-1)}3\right\rceil. \] A size-optimal host is edge-minimal after ignoring isolated vertices, so these restrictions apply to it. These local structural bounds do not determine the optimal size Ramsey number. The solved/refuted status and computational arrowing claim are supplied assessments requiring independent review.

Short English statement

The proposed complete-host formula for $3$-uniform size Ramsey numbers is reported false already at $n=4$: deleting one triple from the $13$-vertex complete host still arrows. The aid also gives red/blue critical-edge witnesses from one avoiding coloring, yielding supported-degree and positive-codegree lower bounds for minimal hosts.
