Definitions and mathematical statement

For a connected simple graph $G$ on $\{0,1,\ldots,n\}$ rooted at $0$, a $G$-parking function is $P:\{1,\ldots,n\}\to{\mathbb{Z}}_{\ge0}$ such that for every nonempty $U\subseteq\{1,\ldots,n\}$ some $v\in U$ has $P(v)$ less than the number of edges from $v$ to $V(G)\setminus U$. Write $\deg P=\sum_vP(v)$ and $g(G)=|E(G)|-|V(G)|+1$. For $K_{n+1}$ these are ordinary zero-based parking functions: after sorting, their entries $b_1\le\cdots\le b_n$ satisfy $b_i<i$.

For a rooted spanning tree $T$, an inversion is a pair $(u,v)$ with $u$ a strict ancestor of $v$ and $u>v$. A $\kappa$-inversion additionally requires $\{\operatorname{parent}_T(u),v\}\in E(G)$; write $\kappa(G,T)$ for their number. On $K_{n+1}$ every inversion meets the extra condition. The original, posed by David Perkinson and attributed to Richard Stanley, asks for a natural tree/parking-function bijection satisfying \[ \deg\phi(T)=g(K_{n+1})-\operatorname{inv}(T),\qquad g(K_{n+1})=\binom n2, \] and suggests an arbitrary-graph extension using Ira Gessel's $\kappa$ statistic. Its recorder already notes a resolution in reference [30].

The attached aid identifies that resolution as the Perkinson--Yang--Yu DFS-burning bijection, reporting for every connected simple graph \[ \deg P=g(G)-\kappa(G,T). \] Its full DFS algorithm and neighbor-order conventions are not supplied in this summary.

For a spanning tree that is the rooted Hamilton path $0=a_0,a_1,\ldots,a_n$, the aid gives an explicit refinement of the inverse map. Each cotree chord $\{a_j,a_k\}$, $0\le j\le k-2$, contributes one to $P(a_k)$ exactly when $a_k>a_{j+1}$; otherwise it corresponds to the unique $\kappa$-inversion $(a_{j+1},a_k)$. Thus \[ P(a_k)=\#\{j:0\le j\le k-2,\ \{a_j,a_k\}\in E(G),\ a_k>a_{j+1}\}. \] On $K_{n+1}$ this becomes \[ P(a_k)=\#\{\ell:1\le\ell<k,\ a_\ell<a_k\}, \] and is a bijection between rooted Hamilton paths and the box $0\le P(v)\le v-1$, $1\le v\le n$. The insertion inverse processes labels $v=1,\ldots,n$, placing $v$ after exactly $P(v)$ of the existing smaller labels, then prefixes the root $0$. The box is a special subset of all parking functions; this explicit refinement does not replace the full spanning-tree bijection.

Short English statement

Stanley's degree/inversion-preserving bijection is reported resolved by DFS burning, including the graph $\kappa$ extension. The supplied aid adds an explicit chord partition and insertion description on rooted Hamilton paths.
