Definitions and mathematical statement

For a prime $p$, write $A+B=\{a+b:a\in A,b\in B\}$ and $AC=\{ac:a\in A,c\in C\}$ in ${\mathbb{F}}_p$. J. Solymosi's question asks for sets with $|A|,|B|,|C|\asymp\sqrt p$ and $|A+B|+|AC|<p$, with the comparability and inequality understood asymptotically for sufficiently large primes.

The original remarks already give affirmative examples. Tao suggests the interval $[1,\lfloor\sqrt p/100\rfloor]$. Alon uses $A=B=C=[1,k]$, $k=\lfloor\sqrt p\rfloor$, with $|A+B|=2k-1$ and $|AC|=M(k)$, the number of distinct integers in the $k$ by $k$ multiplication table. There is no product wraparound, and the cited classical fact $M(k)=o(k^2)$ gives a total $o(p)$. The remark sketches a prime-factor-count explanation but supplies no theorem citation. Tao then proposes larger cardinalities $\asymp p^{1-\epsilon}$, $0<\epsilon<1/2$, or the stronger sum $o(p)$ as nontrivial variants.

The attached aid reports an exact common-container construction handling both variants. Let $1\le N\le p-1$ and $m=\lceil\sqrt{pN}\rceil\le p-1$. There exists $X\subseteq{\mathbb{F}}_p^*$ of size $N$ such that every $A,B,C\subseteq X$ satisfies \[ |A+B|+|AC|\le4m-2. \] A precise realization takes $I=\{1,\ldots,m\}$ and a multiplicative progression $J=\{g^0,\ldots,g^{m-1}\}$ for a primitive root $g$. Choose $\lambda\in{\mathbb{F}}_p^*$ with $|I\cap\lambda J|\ge N$, possible since the average intersection size is $m^2/(p-1)\ge N$, and take any $N$ points of that intersection. Sum and product containers each have at most $2m-1$ elements. This also realizes any three independently specified cardinalities at most $N$ inside the same container.

For fixed $0<\epsilon<1$, $N=\lfloor p^{1-\epsilon}\rfloor$ satisfies the construction conditions for sufficiently large $p$, and gives \[ |X+X|+|XX|\le4\lceil\sqrt{pN}\rceil-2 =O(p^{1-\epsilon/2})=o(p). \] In particular $0<\epsilon<1/2$ answers the printed larger-set variant. The restriction $N\ge1$ prevents treating the aid's informal all-positive-epsilon phrase as a negative bound for an empty set.

Short English statement

The original square-root-scale existence question already has interval examples. The supplied aid gives a common additive and multiplicative container that also yields larger power-size sets with both sum and product sets sublinear in $p$.
