Definitions and mathematical statement
Let $u$ be a unitary of finite order $k$ in a unital $*$-probability space $(\mathcal A,\varphi)$, with $\varphi(u^j)=0$ for $1\le j<k$. For $k\ge2$ this gives $\varphi(u^r)=\mathbf1_{\{k\mid r\}}$ for every integer $r$. Nica's question asks for all mixed free cumulants of $u,u^*$, equivalently their two-variable $R$-transform.For a word $\varepsilon=(\varepsilon_1,\ldots,\varepsilon_n)\in\{+1,-1\}^n$, let $q_B=\sum_{j\in B}\varepsilon_j$ and let $NC(n)$ be the lattice of noncrossing partitions, with top $1_n$ and Möbius function $\mu_{NC}$. The aid's exact formula is \[ \kappa_n(u^{\varepsilon_1},\ldots,u^{\varepsilon_n}) =\sum_{\substack{\pi\in NC(n)\\ k\mid q_B\ \forall B\in\pi}} \mu_{NC}(\pi,1_n). \] Writing $K(\pi)$ for the Kreweras complement and $\operatorname{Cat}_r=(r+1)^{-1}\binom{2r}{r}$, this becomes \[ \sum_{\substack{\pi\in NC(n)\\ k\mid q_B\ \forall B\in\pi}} (-1)^{|\pi|-1}\prod_{C\in K(\pi)}\operatorname{Cat}_{|C|-1}. \] The source's remark about $k$-divisible partitions is literal for pure words, where charge is block size; for mixed words the correct condition is signed charge divisible by $k$. For example a block $(+1,-1)$ has charge zero for every $k$, although its size is not generally divisible by $k$.
For a shorter-word computation, let $\kappa(\varepsilon)$ abbreviate the mixed cumulant, and for $1\in B\subseteq\{1,\ldots,n\}$ let $\mathcal G(B)$ consist of the consecutive index gaps between successive members of $B$ and the tail after its last member. Empty gaps contribute one. Then \[ \kappa(\varepsilon)=\mathbf1_{\{k\mid\sum_j\varepsilon_j\}} -\sum_{\substack{1\in B\subsetneq\{1,\ldots,n\}}} \kappa(\varepsilon_B) \prod_{I\in\mathcal G(B)} \mathbf1_{\{k\mid\sum_{j\in I}\varepsilon_j\}}. \] With noncommuting formal variables $z_+,z_-$, the convention \[ R(z_+,z_-)=\sum_{n\ge1}\sum_{\varepsilon\in\{+1,-1\}^n} \kappa(\varepsilon)z_{\varepsilon_1}\cdots z_{\varepsilon_n} \] specifies every coefficient; no analytic convergence domain is asserted.
The aid also gives the pure closed form \[ \kappa_{km}(u,\ldots,u) =\frac{(-1)^{m-1}}m\binom{km-2}{m-1}\quad(m\ge1), \] with other pure cumulants zero, and the same formula for all-$u^*$ words. Below degree $k$, every mixed cumulant agrees with that of a Haar unitary. At degree $k$ the only differences are the two pure words, each with new cumulant $1$. For $k=1$, $u=1$ and the first cumulants are $1$ while all higher cumulants vanish.
The original benchmark cases are retained in ordinary Catalan notation. For $k=2$, $u=u^*$, odd cumulants vanish and $\kappa_{2m}=(-1)^{m-1}\operatorname{Cat}_{m-1}$. For a Haar unitary, meaning all nonzero integer moments vanish, only even strictly alternating words are nonzero, with that same value. Infinite order alone is not the Haar assumption. The source's type-$A$ Catalan typography is not used to change this standard index. The following Section 6 material on cluster algebras, root compatibility and associahedra is appended background, not a hypothesis of the cumulant problem.
Short English statement
Compute finite-order unitary cumulants by summing noncrossing Möbius weights over partitions whose blocks have charge zero modulo the order. The rule gives the formal $R$-transform, pure cumulants and the first departure from Haar-unitary behavior; block size alone is insufficient for mixed words.Sources
