Definitions and mathematical statement

In the usual connected, boundaryless interpretation, let $M$ be a compact smooth $n$-manifold. A smooth real algebraic variety $W$ is rational over ${\mathbb{R}}$ if it is birational over ${\mathbb{R}}$ to ${\mathbb{P}}^n_{{\mathbb{R}}}$. Its real locus $W({\mathbb{R}})$ carries its Euclidean topology and smooth real structure. The realization question attributed to Nash asks whether, for every intended $M$, there is such a $W$ with a connected component $C\subset W({\mathbb{R}})$ and a diffeomorphism $M\cong C$.

The connected/boundaryless conventions are material: a single connected component cannot be a disconnected manifold, and the real locus of a smooth algebraic variety has no manifold boundary. The extract does not explicitly impose these conventions or say whether $W$ must be projective, proper, affine or merely smooth algebraic. Rationality over ${\mathbb{R}}$ is also distinct from rationality only after extension to ${\mathbb{C}}$.

The higher-dimensional question asks what topological restrictions occur for compact real components when the associated complex variety has Kodaira dimension $-\infty$ or is rationally connected. In a smooth projective complex setting, $\kappa=-\infty$ means all positive pluricanonical spaces vanish; rational connectedness means that two general points can be joined by a rational curve, in the usual characteristic-zero sense. These conditions are not identified with each other or with rationality.

The target is to determine realizability and the corresponding topological restrictions in the specified classes, rather than assert that a general real-algebraic realization theorem already supplies rational models. The precise dimension ranges, compactification conventions and requested restrictions (or equivalence classification of manifolds) are absent. The source's broad question is retained without inventing a topological obstruction theorem or promoting the supplied open label to every known dimensional case.

Short English statement

Ask which compact smooth manifolds occur as components of real loci of smooth rational varieties, and what changes in higher-dimensional classes with Kodaira dimension $-\infty$ or rational connectedness. Connectedness, boundary, rationality field and properness conventions need specification.

Its original attributes the realization question to Nash; its corrected_verified note reports notation cleanup. Literature checked at 2026-08-21: the assessment is supplied dated curation, not independently verified. It calls the higher-dimensional extraction imprecise, labels the broad record open, and reports substantial special cases without a single general answer matching all parts.
