Definitions and mathematical statement
T. Tao's source question takes finite $A,B\subset{\mathbb{Z}}$ with $|A|=m>|B|=n$ and $|A+B|<Km$, and asks whether there is a generalized arithmetic progression $P$ containing $B$, of rank bounded only by $K$, and a set $X$ such that \[ A\subseteq P+X,\qquad |P+X|\leq c(K)|A|. \] A rank-at-most-$d$ GAP means a finite set of the form $a_0+\{\sum_{j=1}^d u_ja_j:0\leq u_j<L_j,\ u_j\in{\mathbb{Z}}\}$; no properness assumption is needed for the aid's obstruction. The aid reports a counterexample for every fixed $K>1$, every proposed integer rank bound $d\geq0$, and every proposed size multiplier $C>0$. Choose parameters in this order: an integer $r>d$; an integer $k\geq2$ with $1+r/(k+1)<K$; an integer $h$ with \[ \binom{h+r}{r}>C h^d\binom{k+r}{r}; \] and then an integer base $N>\max\{h,k+1\}$. Set \[ B=\{0,1,N,\ldots,N^{r-1}\},\qquad A=kB, \] where $kB$ is an iterated sumset, not a scalar dilation. No carries occur in the relevant base-$N$ expansions, so \[ |B|=r+1,\quad |A|=\binom{k+r}{r}>|B|,\quad \frac{|A+B|}{|A|}=1+\frac r{k+1}<K,\quad |hB|=\binom{h+r}{r}. \] For any GAP $P$ of rank at most $d$, its iterated sumset can be covered by at most $h^d$ translates of $P$, hence $|hP|\leq h^d|P|$, even for a nonproper parameterization. If $B\subseteq P$, the displayed choice of $h$ therefore forces $|P|>C|A|$. Since any $X$ satisfying the nonempty covering condition must itself be nonempty, $|P+X|\geq|P|$, contradicting the desired container bound. Thus no choices of rank and size constants depending only on $K$ can satisfy the literal question.
The original remark says a weaker version follows from Plünnecke's inequality when $P$ is merely a set with somewhat small sumset rather than a progression, and notes that the balanced case $m=n$ is Freiman's theorem. Its printed weakened numerical inequality is OCR-corrupted (including the parameter and power of $m$), so an exact replacement bound is not invented. The reported asymmetric counterexample does not refute those distinct statements.
Short English statement
Small asymmetric growth does not force the smaller set into a bounded-rank progression of size comparable to the larger set. The aid's high-base example has small one-step growth but much higher iterated-sum growth than any such progression could support. The balanced Freiman case and a weaker small-doubling-container remark remain distinct.Sources
