Definitions and mathematical statement

Use the finitely generated group setting in the source's definition of permutation stability. Write $S_n$ for the permutations of $[n]=\{1,\ldots,n\}$, and equip it with normalized Hamming distance \[ d_n(\sigma,\tau)=\frac{|\{i\in[n]:\sigma(i)\ne\tau(i)\}|}{n}. \] An almost-homomorphism from $G$ is a sequence of maps $f_n:G\to S_n$, not assumed to be homomorphisms, such that for every fixed pair $g,h\in G$, \[ d_n(f_n(g)f_n(h),f_n(gh))\longrightarrow0. \] The group $G$ is permutation-stable if every such sequence admits homomorphisms $\rho_n:G\to S_n$ with \[ \forall g\in G,\qquad d_n(f_n(g),\rho_n(g))\longrightarrow0. \] Both limits are pointwise in the displayed group elements. A correction must act on the same $n$ points as the original map at every index.

Define $[a,b]=a^{-1}b^{-1}ab$ and $G'=\langle[a,b]:a,b\in G\rangle$. The group is metabelian if $G'$ is abelian, equivalently $[G',G']=1$. The conjecture asks whether every finitely generated metabelian group is permutation-stable in the preceding sense. Thus an arbitrary sequence of increasingly accurate finite permutation models of its multiplication must be approximable, on each fixed element, by genuine finite actions. No finite presentation or torsion restriction is imposed on the metabelian group.

Short English statement

Must every finitely generated metabelian group have the property that approximate permutation actions can be corrected to genuine actions on the same finite sets?
