Verbatim supplied catalogue question
Can the Karchmer–Raz–Wigderson conjecture be proved in full generality, thereby implying superpolynomial formula-size lower bounds?Model and source scope
The original report, printed page 3056, distinguishes a special-case result from the full KRW conjecture. The primary 2017 paper's abstract identifies the intended subject as approximate additivity of depth under block composition; its universal-relation result is not the full conjecture. We use De Morgan formulas with fan-in two AND/OR gates, literal leaves, and constants, and measure depth by the maximum number of gates on a root-to-leaf path. Write $D(f)$ for minimum depth and $L(f)$ for minimum number of leaves. For nonconstant $f:\{0,1\}^m\to\{0,1\}$ and $g:\{0,1\}^n\to\{0,1\}$, put $F(x)=f(g(x^{(1)}),\ldots,g(x^{(m)}))$ on disjoint blocks. These conventions specify the auxiliary calculation; we do not replace the source conjecture by an exact equality with no allowable loss. The restriction route gives a maximum, not a sum
Every nonconstant Boolean function has a one-dimensional restriction equal to a variable or its negation. Indeed choose two inputs with different function values and walk between them by flipping one coordinate at a time. Some adjacent pair has different values; fix all other coordinates at that pair's common values.Apply this fact to $g$ and make the same restriction in every block of $F$. The resulting function is $f$ with each input perhaps negated. Negating input literals does not change minimum depth. Restricting a formula to constants cannot increase depth, so $D(F)\ge D(f)$. Conversely choose a pivotal one-dimensional restriction of $f$. Fix the other blocks of $F$ to inputs giving its prescribed zeros or ones, possible since $g$ is nonconstant. The remaining function is $g$ or its complement. De Morgan duality, obtained recursively by interchanging AND with OR and negating every literal and constant, preserves depth, so $D(F)\ge D(g)$.
Substitution in the opposite direction yields \[ \max\{D(f),D(g)\}\le D(F)\le D(f)+D(g). \] For the upper bound replace each positive input leaf of a minimum-depth formula for $f$ by a formula for $g$, and each negative leaf by its De Morgan dual. Any path traverses at most $D(f)$ outer gates and $D(g)$ inner gates. The lower-bound restrictions above are different restrictions of the same formula. They do not exhibit a single path which must contain both costs, so adding their inequalities is unjustified. Identifying such simultaneous hardness is the unproved step of this route.
A complete read-once special case
Take $f=\operatorname{AND}_m$ and $g=\operatorname{OR}_n$, with $m,n\ge1$. Every one of the $mn$ input variables of $F$ is essential: set the other variables in its own block to zero and make each other block's OR equal one. Flipping the selected variable flips $F$. Any formula omitting a variable has identical evaluations when only that variable is changed, by induction over its gates. Thus every variable must occur in every formula for $F$, giving $L(F)\ge mn$. The direct AND of OR trees uses exactly $mn$ leaves, proving $L(F)=mn$.A binary tree of depth $d$ has at most $2^d$ leaves, by induction on its two subtrees. Conversely a conjunction or disjunction of $r$ inputs can be placed in depth $\lceil\log_2r\rceil$: pad with neutral constants to the next power of two and use a complete binary tree. Therefore \[ \lceil\log_2(mn)\rceil\le D(F) \le\lceil\log_2m\rceil+\lceil\log_2n\rceil. \] The endpoints differ by at most one, since $\lceil a\rceil+\lceil b\rceil-1\le\lceil a+b\rceil$. This gives the expected additive behavior within one gate for this easy family, but the essential-variable argument only gives a logarithm of arity and does not yield general superlogarithmic depth lower bounds.
There is even a harmless rounding failure of exact additivity: $\operatorname{OR}_5\circ\operatorname{OR}_5=\operatorname{OR}_{25}$ has depth five by the same matching upper and lower bounds, whereas $D(\operatorname{OR}_5)+D(\operatorname{OR}_5)=6$. This refutes only an incorrectly strengthened equality. It is not a counterexample to the actual approximate-composition conjecture.
Model-assisted audit and remaining scope
The audit checked negated restrictions, nonconstant hypotheses, depth-zero endpoints, and the distinction between literal counting and formula depth. All proved facts are standard elementary bounds, with no novelty claim. The original question is broad and shares a target with catalogue 30004010; we retain this source ID without presenting it as an independent conjecture. No new general composition lower bound, explicit superpolynomial formula lower bound, numerical experiment, or theorem-prover verification is supplied.Process and contributions

Codex (GPT-6; exact serving revision not exposed) materially assisted with orchestration and format review. No human mathematical authorship, mathematical edits, or independent human proof checking is asserted. The coordinating Codex (GPT-6; exact serving revision not exposed) also provided a separate model-assisted written-proof review of this manuscript. This is not independent human verification. Contribution prompt A was applied to the full definition and supplied source row, then prompt B was applied adversarially to the derived results. The item-specific audit above records the scope checks and rejected extrapolations. Local assembly and structural checks do not establish mathematical correctness. The source catalogue status is preserved in TOP_PROBLEM and is separate from this attempt status.Integration review.
Codex (GPT-6; exact serving revision not exposed) reviewed the written arguments and expanded layout and source-reference wrappers. Repository metadata and the production web renderer were checked using Python 3.13 and JavaScript with MathJax 3.2.2. This model-assisted review is not independent human proof verification; no PDF compilation or formal proof checking is asserted.Completion Estimate
COMPLETION: 0% The proved material is a rederivation of known or auxiliary facts rather than a substantiated new advance on the original target. Restriction arguments prove only the maximum of the component depths. The approximate additive lower bound for arbitrary Boolean block composition remains unproved.References
