Definitions and mathematical statement

Let $d\geq1$, $R_d={\mathbb{Z}}[x_1^{\pm1},\ldots,x_d^{\pm1}]$, and let an ideal $\mathfrak a=(f_1,\ldots,f_m)$ be given by finitely many exact Laurent-polynomial generators. Define \[ V(\mathfrak a)=\{z\in({\mathbb{C}}^*)^d:f_i(z)=0\ (1\leq i\leq m)\},\qquad \mathcal A(\mathfrak a)=\{(\log|z_1|,\ldots,\log|z_d|):z\in V(\mathfrak a)\}. \] The question contributed by Manfred Einsiedler and Doug Lind is whether an algorithm decides $0\in\mathcal A(\mathfrak a)$. The aid's affirmative decision statement requires a finite exact input, not numerical approximations or an unspecified oracle for an ideal.

Multiply each generator by a Laurent monomial to clear negative powers, obtaining $\widetilde f_i$. Put $z_j=u_j+iv_j$, and let $P_i,Q_i\in{\mathbb{Z}}[u_1,v_1,\ldots,u_d,v_d]$ be the real and imaginary parts of $\widetilde f_i(z)$. Then \[ 0\in\mathcal A(\mathfrak a) \quad\Longleftrightarrow\quad \exists(u,v)\in{\mathbb{R}}^{2d}:\quad P_i=Q_i=0\ (1\leq i\leq m),\qquad u_j^2+v_j^2=1\ (1\leq j\leq d). \] Real quantifier elimination therefore decides membership. The unit-circle conditions ensure that monomial clearing changes no relevant zero. Nonmembership has a real-Nullstellensatz certificate of the form \[ -1=\sum_\ell s_\ell^2+\sum_i(a_iP_i+b_iQ_i) +\sum_j c_j(u_j^2+v_j^2-1), \] with polynomial coefficients in an exact coefficient setting. No degree or short-certificate bound is asserted.

For sparse input with integer coefficients and exponents encoded in binary, the aid gives a polynomial-size reduction to a conjunction of quadratic integer equations. Complex repeated-squaring multiplication gates encode the large powers without dense expansion; on the unit circle, negative powers use conjugates. This places the decision problem in the existential theory of the reals and supplies a PSPACE upper bound, without claiming a matching lower bound or a practical polynomial-time algorithm.

The source's dynamical motivation uses the compact abelian group $X_{\mathfrak a}=\widehat{R_d/\mathfrak a}$, Pontryagin dual to the discrete module, with the commuting automorphisms dual to multiplication by the $x_j$. Expansiveness means that some identity neighborhood $U$ has $\bigcap_{n\in{\mathbb{Z}}^d}\alpha^n(U)=\{0\}$. It attributes to Klaus Schmidt the equivalence between expansiveness and $0\notin\mathcal A(\mathfrak a)$ when $\mathfrak a\cap{\mathbb{Z}}=\{0\}$. That qualification is preserved for the dynamical statement; the polynomial membership decision itself applies to every finitely generated input ideal.

Short English statement

Origin membership is exactly common-zero feasibility on the unit complex torus, so real quantifier elimination decides it. The aid also provides a sum-of-squares nonmembership certificate and a sparse binary reduction through quadratic repeated-squaring gates, yielding a PSPACE upper bound. Schmidt's dynamical interpretation keeps its no-nonzero-integers hypothesis.
