Definitions and mathematical statement

In the usual Hilbert-space interpretation, let $0\ne g\in L^2({\mathbb{R}})$ and let $\Lambda\subset{\mathbb{R}}^2$ be a discrete, locally finite time-frequency parameter set. Define \[ \mathcal G(g,\Lambda)=\{E_\xi T_xg:(x,\xi)\in\Lambda\},\qquad E_\xi T_xg(t)=e^{2\pi\sqrt{-1}\xi t}g(t-x). \] An enumeration $(g_j)_{j\ge1}$ is a Schauder basis of $L^2({\mathbb{R}})$ if every $f\in L^2({\mathbb{R}})$ has a unique expansion $f=\lim_{N\to\infty}\sum_{j=1}^N c_jg_j$ in $L^2$ norm. The order is part of this property; unconditional convergence is not assumed.

Using unit-area phase-space normalization, write $Q_R=[-R/2,R/2]^2$ and define the lower and upper Beurling densities by \[ D^-(\Lambda)=\liminf_{R\to\infty}\inf_{z\in{\mathbb{R}}^2} \frac{\#(\Lambda\cap(z+Q_R))}{R^2},\qquad D^+(\Lambda)=\limsup_{R\to\infty}\sup_{z\in{\mathbb{R}}^2} \frac{\#(\Lambda\cap(z+Q_R))}{R^2}. \] The first question is whether a Gabor system which is a Schauder basis must satisfy \[ D^-(\Lambda)=D^+(\Lambda)=1. \] The second asks for an appropriate Balian--Low analogue for Gabor Schauder bases. A classical localization obstruction to compare against is the impossibility of having both \[ \int_{\mathbb{R}} t^2|g(t)|^2\,{\,\mathrm{d}} t<\infty,\qquad \int_{\mathbb{R}}\xi^2|\widehat g(\xi)|^2\,{\,\mathrm{d}}\xi<\infty, \] with Fourier convention $\widehat g(\xi)=\int g(t)e^{-2\pi\sqrt{-1}t\xi}\,{\,\mathrm{d}} t$. The source asks which analogue is valid; it does not state that this exact obstruction holds for every conditional Schauder basis or prescribe endpoint hypotheses.

The terse extract does not explicitly specify the ambient function space or whether all discrete parameter sets or only lattices are intended; the displayed formulation states the standard $L^2({\mathbb{R}})$ and Beurling-density interpretation. No Riesz-basis or positive lower-frame-bound assumption is inserted.

The literature assessment checked on 21 August 2026 reports endpoint Balian--Low results under additional hypotheses and counterexamples to naive versions, leaving the full density and Balian--Low questions only partially resolved. The hypotheses of those endpoint statements must be checked in the cited sources; the assessment does not supply a universal localization theorem.

Short English statement

Must a Gabor Schauder basis have critical lower and upper density one, and what time-frequency localization obstruction survives for such possibly conditional bases? Both questions and the need for extra endpoint hypotheses are retained.
