Definitions and mathematical statement

Question 8.1, Georgios Daskalopoulos. For a three-manifold carrying a contact structure, is there additional structure on its representation/harmonic-bundle moduli analogous to the surface Higgs-bundle case? In particular: does the squared $L^2$ norm of a Higgs field have a contact-geometric interpretation; can its critical points be described; and can this yield representations of the fundamental group into $\operatorname{SU}(2)$ or $\operatorname{PSL}(2,{\mathbb{R}})$?

A precise Corlette-type starting point requires a closed Riemannian three-manifold and reductive $\operatorname{SL}(2,{\mathbb{C}})$ representations, rather than all representations on a manifold with only a contact plane field. In harmonic-metric notation, a flat connection splits as $D=A+\Phi$, with $A$ unitary and $\Phi$ a trace-free self-adjoint endomorphism-valued one-form, satisfying \[ F_A+\Phi\wedge\Phi=0,\qquad d_A\Phi=0,\qquad d_A^*\Phi=0. \] The adjoint and the norm use chosen metrics. On a real three-manifold these data are not automatically ordinary holomorphic Higgs bundles on a complex curve. The source's word "Higgs" thus needs a specified harmonic or transverse model before a critical-point problem can be formulated on a definite moduli space.

Supplied contact-scaling obstruction. Let $(M,\xi)$ be a closed cooriented contact three-manifold, choose a contact form $\eta$ with $\ker\eta=\xi$ and $\eta\wedge{\,\mathrm{d}}\eta>0$, and choose a compatible complex structure $J$ on $\xi$. Put $h_\eta(u,v)={\,\mathrm{d}}\eta(u,Jv)$ on $\xi$. Fix a Hermitian bundle $V$ and a nonzero smooth horizontal covector-valued field $\Phi\in\Gamma(\xi^*\otimes V)$. Define \[ E_{\eta,J}(\Phi)=\int_M|\Phi|_{h_\eta}^2\eta\wedge{\,\mathrm{d}}\eta, \qquad \operatorname{Vol}(\eta)=\int_M\eta\wedge{\,\mathrm{d}}\eta. \] For any positive smooth function $f$, the same plane field has defining form $f\eta$, and the aid asserts \[ h_{f\eta}=f h_\eta,\qquad E_{f\eta,J}(\Phi)=\int_M f|\Phi|_{h_\eta}^2\eta\wedge{\,\mathrm{d}}\eta, \qquad \operatorname{Vol}(f\eta)=\int_M f^2\eta\wedge{\,\mathrm{d}}\eta. \] Consequently the unnormalized energy is not determined by $\xi$ alone. The quotient $E_{\eta,J}(\Phi)/\operatorname{Vol}(\eta)^{1/2}$ is unchanged by constant positive rescaling but, for every fixed nonzero $\Phi$, is not invariant under all nonconstant positive rescalings. The obstruction concerns this fixed-field horizontal norm; it neither proves nonexistence of every possible contact-invariant functional nor automatically compares harmonic representatives after the geometric data change.

The aid identifies a chosen compact Sasakian structure, together with the Biswas--Kasuya correspondence to basic Higgs bundles, as a positive additional-structure framework. It does not supply the correspondence's full stability/Chern-class hypotheses or a classification of critical points of the basic Higgs-field norm. This is a stricter setting than an arbitrary contact structure. No representation-existence theorem follows from the scaling calculation. Moreover trivial representations into both target groups always exist, so the final question needs an intended nontriviality, irreducibility or topological constraint; a $\operatorname{PSL}(2,{\mathbb{R}})$ representation may also require a lift choice to compare it directly with $\operatorname{SL}(2,{\mathbb{C}})$ data.

The source ends with the heading "9 Intersection Cohomology", which begins the next section and adds no hypothesis or question here.

Short English statement

Daskalopoulos asks whether contact geometry adds useful structure to three-dimensional harmonic/Higgs moduli, especially to the field norm and its critical points. The supplied aid shows that a usual horizontal norm depends on the contact form, even after volume normalization. A chosen Sasakian structure offers a more restrictive framework, but the critical-point and nontrivial representation questions remain unspecified or unresolved.
