Definitions and mathematical statement
For a finite simple graph $G$, its $P_4$-structure $\mathcal P_4(G)$ is the $4$-uniform hypergraph on $V(G)$ whose edges are precisely the four-element sets inducing a chordless four-vertex path. For odd $k\geq5$, the odd ring $R_k$ has vertices $u_0,\ldots,u_{k-1}$ and exactly the hyperedges $\{u_i,u_{i+1},u_{i+2},u_{i+3}\}$, with indices modulo $k$.The source asks for an isomorphism-invariant class $\mathcal C_2$ of finite $4$-uniform hypergraphs such that \[ G\text{ has an $M$-join}\Longrightarrow\mathcal P_4(G)\in\mathcal C_2, \qquad R_k\notin\mathcal C_2\quad(k\geq5\text{ odd}), \qquad\mathcal C_2\in\mathrm{NP}. \] The ring condition is literal language exclusion, not exclusion of an induced ring inside every member.
The aid uses a six-nonempty-set $M$-join convention. In the standard homogeneous-pair form, partition the vertices into nonempty $A,B,C,D,E,F$, require every vertex of $A$ to have a neighbor and a nonneighbor in $B$ and vice versa, require $A$ complete to $C\cup F$ and anticomplete to $D\cup E$, and require $B$ complete to $D\cup F$ and anticomplete to $C\cup E$. Other edges are unrestricted. The source extract does not restate this definition; in particular later conventions permitting empty parts must not silently replace the aid's six-nonempty-set interpretation.
Under that convention the aid proposes the existential realization language \[ \mathcal C_2^{\exists}=\{\mathcal H:\exists G\text{ on }V(\mathcal H),\ \mathcal P_4(G)=\mathcal H,\quad G\text{ has an $M$-join}\}. \] A graph adjacency matrix and the six-part partition are a polynomial-size certificate; verifying all four-element subsets gives $O(n^4)$ verification for explicitly represented $n$-vertex inputs. The aid invokes Chvátal's uniqueness theorem that graph realizations of odd rings are odd holes or their complements. An odd hole cannot have this $M$-join, since a vertex in $A$ would have distinct neighbors in $B,C,F$ but has degree two; complement invariance of the six-part definition excludes antiholes as well. Thus it claims all three literal bullets hold.
The aid also reports an $M$-join graph with an induced $C_5$ in $A$. Its $P_4$-structure belongs to $\mathcal C_2^{\exists}$ but contains an induced odd ring. This distinguishes literal membership exclusion from the stronger induced-ring exclusion used in the surrounding structural motivation. The proposed existential language may not provide the intended intrinsic hypergraph decomposition description; that interpretation remains unresolved.
Short English statement
Find an NP-recognizable hypergraph class containing every $P_4$-structure of an $M$-join graph but no whole odd ring. The supplied aid gives a literal existential-witness class under a six-nonempty-part convention and explains why this is weaker than excluding induced odd rings inside all members.Sources
