Definitions and mathematical statement
This is Irene Gamba's 2005 participant research agenda, not a single posed conjecture. It concerns reactive kinetic--Poisson systems for electron and biological transport, granular flows and other dissipative phenomena. Its motivation is that stationary or self-similar nonequilibrium distributions may be far from Gaussian, so closures based on Maxwellian statistics need correction in those regimes. The stated interests include existence, uniqueness, self-similarity, stability, higher-moment hydrodynamic corrections, boundary problems and numerical methods for kinetic, quantum and macroscopic models.Retain the three explicit directions:
- Self-consistent charged kinetic transport and perturbations of stationary nonequilibrium states: deterministic WENO and discontinuous Galerkin solvers compared with DSMC; strong-force boundary problems and hydrodynamic limits; coupling hyperbolic SNS and diffusive SES regimes through kinetic layers; and charged-molecule transport and chemotaxis.
- Quantum trajectory and quantum hydrodynamic models from a semiclassical picture, thermalization and Bose--Einstein condensates: existence and nonexistence for dispersion/diffusion models, strong-field Chapman--Enskog expansion of Wigner transport, high-velocity finite-time behavior of QHD, and numerical quantum-state calculations. The text says "finite time flow up," whose intended terminology is not verified here.
- Boltzmann models for inelastic granular flows or elastic mixtures: dissipative Maxwell and pseudo-Maxwell models, power-law/Lévy tails and trends to equilibrium; pointwise upper bounds for variable hard spheres in elastic and inelastic cases, boundary problems and spatial inhomogeneity; and spectral numerical methods.
The aid adds a moment-closure obstruction in three-velocity space. For a smooth strictly positive probability density $f$ on ${\mathbb{R}}^3$, define mass, momentum, full second-moment tensor and energy-flux convention by \[ \int f=1,\quad m_i(f)=\int v_i f(v)\,{\,\mathrm{d}} v,\quad P_{ij}(f)=\int v_iv_j f(v)\,{\,\mathrm{d}} v,\quad Q_i(f)=\int v_i|v|^2f(v)\,{\,\mathrm{d}} v. \] At zero momentum, $P$ is also the central pressure tensor. A convention with a factor $1/2$ in $Q$ has the same nonuniqueness. The reported first family has one fixed positive-definite tensor $P_*$ and, for every $q\in{\mathbb{R}}$, a smooth positive Gaussian-mixture density $f_q$ with finite moments such that \[ m(f_q)=0,\qquad P(f_q)=P_*,\qquad Q_1(f_q)=q. \] Thus even the entire pressure tensor, in addition to mass and momentum, neither determines nor bounds the next flux component. The reported second smooth family preserves these lower data, fixed longitudinal moments $\int v_1^j f$ for $0\le j\le3$, and zero energy-flux vector, while \[ \int v_1^4 f(v)\,{\,\mathrm{d}} v\longrightarrow\infty. \] A power-law variant has the same lower-moment finiteness but infinite longitudinal fourth moment. The summary does not supply the exact mixture weights or tail formula. These are supplied realizability claims, not a proof that every closure is impossible: an additional constitutive assumption, equilibrium principle or tail condition may select a closure. No collision kernel, Poisson boundary problem, scaling limit or numerical convergence target is fixed for the whole agenda.
Short English statement
Preserve Gamba's agenda on nonequilibrium kinetic, quantum and dissipative transport models. The aid supplies smooth density families showing that fixed low moments need not determine or bound the next flux or fourth moment; it does not resolve the agenda's many PDE and numerical questions.Sources
