Definitions and mathematical statement

The source asks whether superclass theory for $U_n$ is tame, phrased as equivalence between a tame algebra's module category and "the category of supercharacters." That latter category is not defined: supercharacters are characters, not objects with specified morphisms, and the coefficient field, additive closure and normalization matter. The aid analyzes three natural inherited-morphism interpretations for $G=U_n(q)$, $n\ge1$, using complex representations and the standard algebra-group supercharacters, not degree-weighted canonical rescalings.

Choose a representation $V_\lambda$ affording each distinguished standard supercharacter, and take all $G$-intertwiners as morphisms. The raw full subcategory on these finitely many isomorphism classes is not additive: it cannot contain arbitrary finite sums of a nonzero object. Its additive hull $\mathcal C_{\mathrm{add}}$ is the full subcategory of finite direct sums of the $V_\lambda$, including zero.

The aid's criterion is that $\mathcal C_{\mathrm{add}}$ is idempotent complete exactly when every distinguished supercharacter is irreducible. If $V_\lambda$ is reducible, projection onto one irreducible constituent is an ambient intertwiner idempotent. Its image is not in the additive hull: irreducibles belong to disjoint supercharacter blocks, so no other distinguished module can supply that constituent alone, and sums cannot undo the other constituents or multiplicities. A category of all finite-dimensional modules over an algebra is idempotent complete; consequently this additive hull cannot be such a module category in the reducible case.

For the standard theory of $U_n(q)$, the aid reports that all supercharacters are irreducible for $n\le3$. Then the additive hull is the entire semisimple category $\operatorname{Rep}_{{\mathbb{C}}}(U_n(q))$, hence a module category of finite representation type. For every $n\ge4$, the functional \[ \lambda=E_{13}^*+E_{24}^* \] on the strictly upper-triangular algebra supplies a crossing supercharacter and a nonsplitting idempotent in the additive hull. Its standard left-orbit size is $q^2$ and two-sided orbit size $q^3$, so its character norm is $q>1$, explicitly verifying reducibility. Therefore \[ \mathcal C_{\mathrm{add}}\text{ is a module category} \quad\Longleftrightarrow\quad n\le3 \] under these conventions.

The Karoubi envelope, obtained by splitting every idempotent, is instead $\operatorname{Rep}_{{\mathbb{C}}}(U_n(q))$ for every $n$: every ordinary irreducible occurs in some supercharacter and becomes available as a summand. This completion is semisimple and of finite representation type. If "tame" is used inclusively it may include this finite case, but none of the three constructions produces a nontrivial tame category of infinite representation type. These results do not prohibit a different categorification with different morphisms, a modular-coefficient category or another uniform-in-$n$ framework. The original intended category and notion of tameness still require specification.

Short English statement

The proposed category of supercharacters is undefined. With standard complex supercharacter modules and inherited intertwiners, the raw category is not additive, its additive hull is a module category exactly for $n\le3$, and splitting all idempotents always recovers the finite semisimple ordinary representation category.
